A short post from me today, as I’m spending some time with Little Miss Green doing all those things I have said ‘yes’ to over the past week, but not actually got around to doing. That must be so frustrating at the age of seven!

Just a quick mention then, for Earth Day, which falls upon us tomorrow and Real Nappy Week which started today.

Earth Day has been around since 1970 and the aim is to broaden the base of support for environmental programs, to rekindle public commitment and build community activism around the world through a broad range of events and activities.

This is a great day for us to celebrate the earth, and, falling right in the middle of International Downshifting Week, is the perfect time for you to do just one small act of greenness!

Simple ideas include:

Start that compost heap you’ve been promising to do.

Cook a meal using seasonal, local ingredients.
Write a letter to your local MP rallying some action and support for climate change.
Cycle or walk one of your journeys today.
Turn off the TV tonight and play a board game, sing around the piano or knit something.
Plant something - just a few herbs in your kitchen windowsill will do for today!
To find out if there is anything happening near you type your postcode into the Earth Day website and it will come up with a list of organised events taking place in your area to help raise awareness of Earth Day.

The women’s environmental network are no longer running Real Nappy Week, so it’s been handed over to  the Real Nappy Campaign.

The theme for Real Nappy Week 2008 will be Combat Climate Change with Real Nappies, because using reusable nappies responsibly can have a positive impact in this respect. Using washable nappies, parents have much more control over their climate impact than with disposables.

If you’re interested in trying real nappies, but don’t know where to start, then check out the Real Nappy Campaign website. You can type in your postcode and it will show you a list of retailers, agents and advisors in your area. Speaking to someone with experience can prevent you making a costly and frustrating mistake.

There is also an ‘events finder’ to see what is going on in your area this week. There will be lots of advise, roadshows and demonstrations taking place throughout the week.

There are so many wonderful organisations and campaigns all striving towards protecting our beautiful planet. Why not do one random act of kindness for Mother Nature today and be sure to comment and tell us what you did!
