The Biggest Climate awareness campaign ever

earthhourYou know what I’m talking about, right?

Yes, it’s time for Earth Hour. On Saturday 27th March at 8:30pm your local time, you’re invited to the biggest celebration on the earth.

All you have to do to participate is switch off your lights for an hour! The World Wildlife Fund want a billion people to join in to show we care about climate change.

You can register as an individual, organisation, school or business. Once you sign up you’ll get tips and resources for how you can join in and help spread the word.

We took part last year and extended our challenge. At 8:30 we turned off the trip switch bringing electricity into the house and didn’t turn it on again until the following morning. This meant we could not cheat! We sat infront of the fire and talked and went to bed with candles. The house was silent and it was wonderful. We all agreed we’d had a great time and would be joining in again this year. We slowed down, spent quality time together without distractions and reduced our carbon footprint.

If you want to raise the stakes further, why not join in with Malcolm and Rachel’s Torchwood project? They are running a spring equinox power off weekend. The Power Off weekend is 48 hours, from 11pm on the Friday night to 11pm on the Sunday (19-21 March 2010), without electricity.

Their power off weekend is all about gaining perspective on our lives. It’s about realising the dependency we have on electricity, combined with the fact that 24/7 computers, TV, lights and emails take us away from the people and things we love as well as our communities and ourselves.

You can leave a comment on their blog, or sign up on their Facebook page.

What about you - will you be joining in? It’s our ‘Change the world Wednesday” challenge for this week too!
