British sandwich week

Submitted by Mrs Green on Thursday, 13 May 2010 Loading Add to favourites  2 Comments

british sandwich weekIt’s British sandwich week and the number 1 choice for filling is still chicken salad.

In fact when you look at the top 20 list, there is a serious lack of vegetarian choices on there, which I find interesting.

It would seem that despite our imports of mozzarella, vine tomatoes and ciabatta, our favourite sandwich fillings still centre around meat between two white pieces of bread.

Out of the top 20 choices, vegetarian ones only account for 4 of of them, and they’re pretty uninspiring: egg and cress, cheese and onion, ploughmans and egg mayonnaise!

The sandwich was created by the 4th Earl of Sandwich who, as legend has it,  asked his servant for some ‘cuts of beef’ between two slices of bread. The Earl’s motive was that he wanted something to eat but did not want the inconvenience of having to stop gambling!

So in honour of the great British convenience food and supporting the increasing trend towards a reduced meat diet, I thought it would be fun to share our favourite vegetarian sandwich fillings. Here are  5 of mine:

Avocado

Avocado mashed with a little soy sauce or mango chutney and mixed with sprouted seeds

Hummous

Roasted red pepper hummus or olive hummous with crisp lettuce

Lentils

Red lentil dahl with lots of garlic, chilled and set in the ‘fridge then spread like pate onto crispy, buttered bread with sliced tomatoes

Chick peas

Last nights chick pea curry, roughly mashed makes an awesome sandwich filling!

Potatoes

When I’m feeling in need of comfort food, my ultimate salt and fat delight is sliced, fried potatoes topped with feta cheese! The bread has to be buttered thickly too so it’s an indulgent greasy delight! Best served on rye bread which soaks up all the juices and a complete cure for PMT ;)

What about you - please share your favourite meat free sandwich fillings?

Oh stop it I’m drooling and hungry now (It’s only just gone half ten!)

If you put chickpea curry on a sandwich then add a tiny smear of mango chutney or lime pickle. Use a chappati as a wrap for a more indian style sandwich, and add raita and a little thinly chopped lettuce.

My own favourite sandwich is toasted cheese with homemade tomato chutney.

Sandwiches can be one of the healthy options for lunch - until you realise that some people put butter and mayonaise on sandwiches! Yuck!

@Diane: I LOVE the sound of chickpea with mango wrapped in a chappati - that sounds amazing; thank you! My daughter is partial to butter AND mayo LOL!
