I know we are several years on from this article and things have moved on in this time, if you look at http://www.medlocks.co.uk/sites/medlocks/ave_cat/Lighting.pdf at the bottom of the page is under shelf lighting [no price but it may be usful to phone them]. When we bought our caravan we had these lights as standard and we are really impressed. If not to expensive we will get them for our kitchen.

Suddenly I hear the theme to Robot Chicken (A Seth Green Show) ringing in my head. lol Anyways, this sounds like an interesting project. Question is, how cost effective will it be overall? Will it be any cheaper than what you can do by just buying the LEDs? And Then how much time will you have tied up in this project?

@Den: Hi Den; your blog is doing well. Yes, it is time consuming, but when it’s a passion of yours, that time passes quickly.

I love writing, so it’s not really that hard. If I can help people make changes and be inspired by them, then it’s wonderful - life is about sharing and making the world a better place in my opinion

Companion planting and natural pest control are particular interests of mine; so I’ll get some information together. Thanks for the inspiration!

Hi there. I’m surfing around looking for support and inspiration on a million things, one of which is lighting - so great to read your article. We are trying to get an off-grid campsite up & running and although we’ll be using a genny for power this year, we hope to be using solar PV by next year so low watt LED has been recommended. The poor quality of light bothers me and also we are trying to source bulbs in Montenegro which is even more limited and expensive than in the UK. I’d be really interested to hear about your homemade lights when you get around to that! Sounds like you are into gardening too so links to blogs about that would be great. I’m still learning how all this blogging stuff works and feeling my way…

From a personal point of view, I LIKE incandescent bulbs; I probably shouldn’t say that on a green blog But I like the colour of the lighting and the way it falls.

Next best for me is LED; I just hope the technology moves as quickly as the ban on incandescents …

Hi Gina - great to see you and thank you for leaving a comment. Lightbulbs are on hold as the garden takes first place for upkeep, but Mr Green will be back on the project later in the year. We think we have found a solar panel, which was the part that was holding us up, so hopefully things should begin to move in the direction we want it!
