Grow your own!

windowsill-herb-gardenMy mantra is that you don’t have to have a garden to grow your own – anybody can have a go!

All you need is a hanging basket filled with tumbling tomatoes, a windowbox of salad leaves or some pots of mini vegetables outside the back door to enjoy a little self sufficiency.

You can sprout seeds in your kitchen, grow peppers in pots on a large sunny windowsill or grow small pots of herbs on your dining room table.

Get creative with your space, grow some healthy, organic food, reduce your food miles and save yourself some money!

Agreed! I live in an apartment with no outdoor space, but I do have huge south-facing windows with ledges. I finally bought some pots and soil for seeds I had been given a while ago, planted them without much hope, and am amazed as tiny green sprouts push their way up through the sod. Too bad I didn’t label anything…my seeds included things for the cat (catnip, rye, oats) as well as herbs for my kitchen (basil, chives, parsley). I think I’ll have to wait a while before I can figure out what’s what, or risk putting catnip into my pesto.

@Jennifer: It’s wonderful when the seedlings push their way through isn’t it? Even after years, it’s total magic. Love the catnip idea, but perhaps your cats will show you which pots are full of that one 😀
