According to green clothing company, Rapanui, around 750 trillion plastic bags are consumed worldwide every year.

The Marine Conservation Society state that 50% of beach litter is plastic and 5% of this is disposable plastic carrier bags. These bags are a particular bugbear of mine and it was reading a story about the devastating effects that ingestion of or entanglement in plastic can have on marine life that started our own zero waste journey here at Chez Green.

The founders of Rapanui, the Drake-Knight brothers,  quickly established the company amongst the most ethically progressive green clothing companies and became one of the youngest companies ever to be shortlisted for the Sustainable Business Awards.

They sell a small range of ethical clothing for men and women, including jeans, t-shirts and underwear. Each item is organic, fairtrade and their factories use wind turbines and solar photovoltaic panels to generate their own renewable energy.

In addition to donating 5% of their profit to environmental charities, Rapanui are addressing the disposable plastic bag issue by giving away a free bag for life eo everyone who places an order before the end of the March 2009.
