Hi Lisa,
Good to see you and thanks for the honey and lemon idea. You know, alot of over-the-counter remedies have these exact things in them (alongside a bunch of chemicals). It really is a time-honoured remedy, and, as you pointed out, it's cheap and most people have these things in the house. :)

Regarding the cough syrup, I have a good/natural recommendation for a replacement. When I was growing up, my mom always served me lemon and honey. Come to find out this is a british thing, I guess. Anyhow, boil some water, add a few tablespoons of lemon juice and a few tablespoons of honey. Just doctor it up to taste. The lemon juice has healthy things like vitamin C and the honey is soothing and coats the throat. Having the drink hot is soothing too, probably best to let it cool to warm for a child. This is a great remedy for little cost and with things that might be hanging around the house. I keep a bottle of lemon juice in the fridge for this need and canning. Try it, I hope you like! -Lisa (onthefox.blogspot.com)
