.tel – the new way to communicate
The other week I was helping a friend choose a domain name for her new website when we stumbled across the .tel TLD.
I had no idea what it was and put it out of my mind until I heard about a new campaign this week:
.tel – the new way to communicate!
After watching this hilarious video below I was hooked.
Whenever I sort through my paperwork, I invariably find old business cards, brochures, leaflets, marketing material and scraps of paper with telephone numbers jotted on them.
The ink has run, I haven’t put the full details on the piece of paper or the paper is so creased I can’t read it. Into the recycling it goes…
What a waste and how frustrating!
With .tel all your communication needs are met with one simple move. You purchase your .tel name and use it to share your conatct details.
You can share as little or as much as you like such as your name, address, web pages, IM clients, Social Media profiles or anything you like. It’s instant, effective and easy to use!
.tel is the new green in communication! Think of all that paper you’ll save. In addition you’ll use a lot less server space as the data is delivered to a template page – no need for a website! (thanks to @justinhayward for that information!)
What about you? Can you see a use for .tel in your life? Have a look at the video and let me know what you think!

I hadn’t considered the positive environmental aspects of using a .tel. Thanks for the ideas! Also, just to clarify, .tel domains cannot use _any_ of your server space because there is currently no way to host the domain yourself (this is a good thing).
For some background info and thoughts on .tel domains checkout this article: http://patrickberkeley.com/code/2009/04/30/on-registering-and-configuring-a-tel-domain-name/
I love .tel so much that I created a .tel Only Search Engine which allows users to search the Internet for:
– information stored in domain names with .tel extension
– .tel-related info on the Web
and displays .tel-related news too:

@Patrick Berkeley: Hi patrick, great to see you here and thank you for writing such a great article on your site. And thanks too for the clarification about server space 🙂
@DotTelFinder: Hi DotTelFinder – that’s a great resource you have created there. I hope things are working out well for you 🙂
