4 easy ways to help ease winter coughs and colds

herbal tea natural remedy for winter coughs and coldsIt’s officially winter. Kind of.

I guess it depends on whether you follow the meteorological, pagan or Gregorian idea of when winter starts! However, we can all agree it’s getting colder.

Unfortunately for many that means an immune system that is under strain and more bugs and illnesses going around.

If you’re feeling the niggle of a scratchy throat, a bit of a shiver or that your head is full of cold, here are some lovely ways to help yourself feel better. And who knows, you may even stop that pathogen in its tracks and continue to enjoy good health! These ideas were all inspired by a thread on a Facebook group I’m on.

Herbal teas

An infusion of fresh thyme and oregano has some powerful antibiotic benefits. If you don’t ‘have fresh herbs on hand, 15 drops of echinacea tincture in hot water with honey and freshly squeezed lemon juice is a good alternative.

Hot toddy

Humans have been drinking hot toddies for centuries. If you’re making one for a child and don’t want alcohol try a mixture of ginger, cinnamon, lemon, honey and a tiny pinch of cayenne.

Essential oils

I’m an essential oils girl, so at first sign of something coming on I take a salt bath with frankincense to draw things out. Then in my room I’ll burn oils such as lemon, rose, lavender and sandalwood to boost my immune system.

Healing soups

Chicken soup is a time honoured remedy for soothing the body and soul. If you’re veggie then a soup packed with plenty of onions, garlic, thyme and turmeric with greens such as kale and parsley is light to digest and packs plenty of immune stimulating punch.
